Lighting Their Fires Blog 5

Lighting Their Fire is about how children can change the world in the snap of a finger. The story is based on a real life story by author Rafe Esquith of how children can make a difference in this world. One story is about a girl name Toni that lived near the worst parts of Europe were there was a lot of poverty living all around her. Once she got her education she stepped up her role to become a successful company to help donate cows or livestock to families living under the poverty line.

The book is not 100% true, but some stories where based on stories of young children trying to make a difference in this world. Many of these children mostly grew up in hard living conditions like living in poverty or living in their streets of one of the worst living cities in the world. Most of these children know whats going on in there community and they want to make a difference.

Dead End In Norvelt Blog 4

The main character Jack Gantos is a refection of myself as a child. As a misbehave character at the wrong time and the wrong place, it reminds of my self as a child. For being grounded for an entire summer, is pretty remarkable to do such a thing. In the text it states that " I'm here in the middle of nowhere wasting my summer because I got grounded for doing the wrong actions" Therefore Jack regrets getting grounded and wasting his whole summer. I've never gotten in trouble that my punishment would last through the ENTIRE summer. I know what he did is wrong but I think that the punishment is wrong and needs to be reduced by his parents.

After being sent to Military camp for boys for the whole summer. Now Jack has now to face other boys whole did much worse actions did Jack has done. It's now the "Survival of the Fittest" as Jack recall after the first couple of days of the camp. Now Jack has to face 2 1/2 more months of this camp until he gets released and begin school again. Jack recalls being in the camp "horrendous, a jungle, and a prison for young men." Maybe this would not happen if Jack did that one thing that lead up to all of this. Being in Military camp, Jack needs to learn new rules. Jack feels like he's being watched (24/7). If any move Jack does, the guards are on him. This proves his problem at Military camp.

American Indian Struggle

American Indians have been marginalized in society for centuries of time. Explorers have killed and conquered land from the American Indians. In the article it states that "By 1879, settlers and the U.S. Army had forced most tribes off their lands, and (white man) diseases had devastated the native population." Therefore, American Indians have been kicked off from there own land since explores came. Also American Indians have been killed or trying to kill the Indian of the person. In the article it states that "Pratt also planned to (civilize) them-to strip them of their traditions and ways of life. Pratt believed that the children needed to completely abandon their (Indian-ness) in order to succeed in America. This proves how American Indians were being brainwash and trying to get rid of their religion. "Kill the Indian, save the man," was Pratt's saying

Luther Standing Bear and Shanice Britton were both American Indians who had both similarities and differences. Both Luther and Shanice lived in the West part of the United States. In the article it talks about how many American Indians use to live in the West and today many still live in the Western part of the US. This proves that both people lived in the same area of land in the US. Shanice lived through a period were the government protected their land and gave American Indians acres of land to them. Ironically Luther Standing Bear was one of the people to drive the US government to help and protect Native Americans. This proves how society has respected their culture now than back in history.

Dead End Blog 3

"Dead End in Norvelt" is a story written by author Jack Gantos and also is the main character of the story. A kid has his excitement for summer has gotten him into a lot of trouble. On my page 32 it states that " one day I was on the verge of summer. The next thing I know, I'm grounded for the whole summer!" This proves that the childish act of Jack has gotten him in trouble. Also his family is going on vacation without him cause he's grounded. This reminds me a lot of a Home Alone style of plot but who knows what's going to happen next in the story. This proves that Jack might be going on with something.

Jack Gantos is the kind of my person that he's smart, but makes terrible decisions. The only thing that is stoping Jack from summer vacation is his actions that he did. He also seems that Jack would be a great person if it wasn't for his poorly made decisions. This proves that his actions can pay the price. He has to pay up with community service and taking care of the house while his family is on vacation. This proves what he is doing while being grounded.
